The Sixth Topic is Human Rights and Solidarity
Human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights: all these values are included in the EU treaties. EU citizens’ rights are guaranteed at a national level by the constitutions of individual countries, and at a EU level by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, which has been adopted in 2000.
The European Parliament, together with the European Commission and the Council, play an essential role in protecting human rights and in promoting solidarity among the EU Member States.
Among these rights, the European Parliament supports the freedom of thought and recognizes it as one of the most important: every year, individuals who have fight against human rights violations are awarded with the Sakharov Prize.
